This Indian Kati is a must-have treasure to anyone interested in swords and especially if you are interested in Indian swords! I have collected a lot of swords from various manufacturers and cultures, Chinese, Japanese, European, etc. and have looked far and wide for one like this to no avail. I’m based in America, and unfortunately genuine and well-made Indian shastars are hard to come by in my part of the world. Only Shree Amritsar Sword seemed to have anything like this available in their stock and was willing to ship internationally and I’m happy to say that the sword is not only well made in a recognizably genuine Indian fashion, but also sold at a reasonable pricing.
The sword is stunning to look at. Its guard is covered with intricate floral engravings that are pleasing to the eye. It also has a very thick and solid knuckle guard shaped like a thick contoured band which is unlike other manufacturers’ knuckle guards which often are merely thin weak tubes of iron that are easy to bend. Even better, the knuckle guard flairs out into a simplified carving of a lion’s face! The blade has a very thick t-section spine with a very clear taper going from the base to the tip (about 8.5 mm from the base tapering to about 5 mm 5 cm from the tip according to my measurements). The blade is gracefully crafted and is about 40 mm wide at the base and flares out to about 45 mm at its widest part. The steel of the blade feels solid with no wobble or floppiness seen on other manufacturers’ more poorly made swords and everything feels solidly assembled. The sword itself is a wonderful thing to look at, but even better, the sword’s scabbard is thoughtfully designed with an adjustable cord wrap that loops over the guard to keep it secure when you don’t want it out.
It’s very hard to find anything to criticize about this sword. If I were really to nit-pick, the sword feels a little bit heavy for my hands at about 2 lbs 10 oz/1.197 kgs with a point of balance at about 6.5 inches/16.5 cm from the guard but honestly that weight and balance is reasonable and within acceptable historical range for a wider bladed kati like this. Also, the Indian style disk pommel feels a little uncomfortable for my hands since the edge of the disk bangs against my wrist a little bit, but again, that really is just a nit-pick and probably has more to do with the fact that I’m unfamiliar with Indian styles of swords and have never practiced Indian martial arts like Gatka or Shastar Vidya. I’ve seen other antique Indian swords with similarly large disk pommels, so it’s probably more to do with my inexperience with these kinds of swords vs. anything to do with the smith. This sword to my knowledge is the real deal and very close to an actual antique kati/sosun pattah with t-section blade! Don’t believe me? Then, look at the statistics I just gave in my review and check out these antique examples for comparison:

Shree Amritsar Sword’s customer service was also good. When I placed the quote request, I almost immediately received an e-mail from Manmohan-ji informing me of shipping prices and an approximate time for when it would be ready to ship. He also very politely and courteously answered any questions and concerns I had. It took a few weeks for everything to be ready, but once it was ready and I paid, I got a tracking number from FedEx and it swiftly arrived at my house’s doorstep within about a week’s time after passing through Arabia and Europe! The item was packaged well with foam inserts in the box preventing any damage that might come to it during shipping and encased in a luxurious bag emblazoned with the store’s logo.
Manmohan-ji and his team did a wonderful job! If you are reading this review and feel the need to get this rare Indian sword, I highly recommend it! You won’t be disappointed.
