Description

Indian Katar

The katar is a type of push dagger from the Indian subcontinent. Blades of katar are triangular in shape, double edge, resting upon on H shape handle with a double grip in middle providing a perfect grip in hand to hand combat. The blade has been chiselled on both side showcasing the Goddess ‘Lakshmi’ with two elephants. This portrait is inspired from the Deccan Indian specially from Tamilnadu a state in India. this form of goddess is known as “Gaja Lakshmi. Gaja means elephant and lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth. It is beleived that this form brings good fortune and wealth to the heir of the weapon. Some katars are also used for worship in temples.  The length of the blade is 13.5 and total length goes for 23.5. Having originated in South India, It is alternatively known in Tamil as kuttuva which means “stabbing blade”. The earliest forms of katar is being closely associated with the 14th-century Vijayanagara Empire and are  still used in kalaripayattu and gatka today.
