Talwar

Most Indians use the word talwar for swords or long blades. This word is derived from Sanskrit and means sword. Talwars come from different kinds of blades, but the vast majority of these blades are curved or have double-pointed tips. 

Although the origin of a talwar is unknown, it was a popular weapon that played a key role in Indian history. Its moderate length allowed warriors to easily weld it or carry it without feeling overburdened. 

Even in today’s era, talwar is quite popular among various sword lovers. Its design allows for a more secure grip. However, the design of talwars has changed over time. One of the most noticeable changes in talwars involves a wider blade towards the tip.

The word golia comes from the Punjabi word ‘GOL’, which means round. As the name depicts, it’s a sword with the utmost curve reflecting a crescent moon shape. This north Indian sword is popular mainly in the Punjab region.

It was best useful in indoor combats, especially in the narrow galleries or stairs of a fort. The blade is of carbon steel with two parallel fullers on it. Its blade is similar to the Persian Shamshir, but it also has a talwar-style hilt and a broader blade.

Katar

Katars are small stabbing knives forged from broken blades of swords. The katar is characterized by its H-shaped horizontal hand grip, which results in the blade sitting above the holder’s knuckles. 

While most katars in south India are straight, some have wavy blades. Their slightly curved blades are best suited for slashing attacks. 

The Sirohi

The Sirohi sword draws its roots from the town named Sirohi in Rajasthan. The sword was carefully crafted to incorporate the rich traditions of Rajasthan. The Sirohi is slightly curved and slim in width. This famous sword is popularly known for its strong blade.

The Kirsch

This sword is not entirely straight but is slightly in forward direction towards the tip. It is a single-edged sword and comes with a down-swept tip. It often resembles a Katti, which is also a strong sword.

Pattisa 

This kind of sword is used in the parts of Southern and Central India. Pattison has a broad, double-edged blade reaching almost 1m in length. The sword generally has a decorative design on both edges. 

Dhup

Dhup is the Deccani name for this straight, single-edged sword. However, this sword is well-known by the name of sukhela in the South. Sukhela is pattern-welded steel that is considered a strong sword.

Katri
