History of Bhavani Talwar – Shivaji Maharaj Sword
The Bhavani Talwar, also known as the Shivaji Maharaj Sword and the Maratha Dhop Talwar, is a legendary weapon closely linked to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his devotion to Goddess Tulja Bhavani. According to legend, the goddess gifted this sword to Shivaji, symbolizing divine strength. The name “Bhavani” means “giver of life” in Marathi. The Tulja Bhavani Temple is central to this belief and Shivaji’s spiritual legacy.
Historically, the straight blade may have been influenced by Portuguese designs, while the Muleri Muth (basket hilt) was a native innovation. The sword is also referred to as the Jagdamba Talwar, Firangi sword, or Tulja Talwar. Shivaji Maharaj used different swords across his campaigns, all representing valor and Swarajya.
The original Bhavani Talwar reportedly weighed about 2 kilograms and was valued for its balance, speed, and durability in battle. It remains a symbol of Maratha courage and divine justice.
