Description
Dand Patta / Patta
Dand Patta or Patta is a gauntlet style sword, originating from the Indian subcontinent. The Patta or Dand Patta (Marathi language name of the sword) was widely used by the Maratha warriors. It had a straight blade ranging from 36 inches to 44 inches in length and 1.5 inches to 2 inches in breadth. It was considered to be a highly effective weapon for infantrymen against heavily armoured cavalry. The most attractive part of the Pata is its hilt which takes the form of a half-gauntlet, the inside of which is usually padded with leather or fabric. The hilt is attached to the blade by decorative metal arms known as “Pankhuri” in the native language that extends forward on both sides of the blade. The length of this blade is 36 inches and the total length goes for 48 inches. The hilt is made of iron and is decorated with brass fittings and genuine leather padding inside.
